Powerful and admirable film by Hans Alfredson. Den Enfaldige Mördaren deserves to be better known. It's a fabulous film directed by Hans Alfredson and stars Stellan Skarsgård in one of his most memorable performances as the hare-lipped young man Sven, who's considered retarded by his surroundings.

Den Enfaldige Mördaren is the best Swedish non-Bergman movie in my opinion. If you like weird, black humour, give Torsk på Tallinn a go(I love it but it may appear inpenetrable to a non-Swede). I have also tried showing Blinkende Lygter to foreign people, who did not get it's brilliance.
Att angöra en brygga and Den enfaldige mördaren by Hans Alfredson and Tage Danielson are also brilliant classics. And then look up other movies made by these directors. Most of them are good.
As a person who absolutely loves movies from the 30s-50s I can recommend En enda natt from 1939, Pappa sökes from 1947 and Livet går vidare from 1941. But there's lots of old movies from this era on Svt Play if you'd like to watch some movies from this era. But newer classics, I'd recommend a series called Albert & Herbert.

Despite having what appears to be a very straightforward plot, this is one of the truly great and yet underappreciated tragedies about the faith of an outcast, and the way it's visually presented is deserving of praise. The outcome of "Den enfaldige mordaren" is unexpected in and of itself.
