Since Ron Burgundy and the Channel Four News Team graced our big screens nine long years ago, they’ve grown into gods of modern pop culture. Their follies have been recounted at work places, high schools and in frat houses. Their one-liners have been woven into wedding speeches, Powerpoint presentations and drunken conversations. Somewhere along the line, Adam MacKay and Will Ferrell’s preposterous, hilarious improv baby Anchorman became a t-shirt.

So it’s with some trepidation that the film’s rabid fans – of which there are quite probably squillions - will approach the sequel, which has also suffered from a bewilderingly aggressive marketing campaign. But there’s no need for them to worry, because Anchorman 2 continues the proud tradition of preposterousness, left-field hilarity, and uncomfortable nudging at frowned-upon boundaries. You might as well call it Anchorman: Amplified.

The sequel bases itself in the ‘80s New York hallways of ‘GNN’, the first 24-hour news-network and the new home for Ron and his team, who predictably thrive in the dawn of media fluff and infotainment. There are new rivalries for Ron to contend with, including slimy bigwig anchor Jack Lime (an ever reliable James Marsden), who takes over the reins from Vince Vaughn as the biggest bully in the media playground.

Ron also spends a great deal of time trying to reconnect with his now estranged wife Veronica (Christina Applegate) and son Walter (Judah Nelson), who prove an increasingly annoying thorn in his side as he attempts to climb the career ladder. (“Are you sure he’s not a midget with a learning disability?” he asks Veronica of Burgundy Jr.)

Anchorman 2 is an achingly funny, overlong comedy that takes the anarchic flavour of the first film and amplifies it. While it would have been nice to have seen a little more attention paid to the rest of the central cast, Ferrell does a fine job carrying most of the film’s considerable weight on his manly shoulders. Let’s hope we don’t have to wai...
