- Pointe-à-Pitre. To visit Guadeloupe in 1 week, you will have no choice, you will have to land at the only international airport on the island which is located in Pointe-à-Pitre.
- Port-Louis / North of Grande Terre. On the second day of your 7-day circuit in Guadeloupe, head to the North of Grande Terre. Start the day in Port-Louis, a very picturesque little fishing village.
- The Pointe des Châteaux / Saint-François / Sainte-Anne. For the third day of your one-week road trip in Guadeloupe, I advise you to visit the south-east of Grande Terre.
- Basse-Terre. For the second part of your 1-week itinerary in Guadeloupe, discover Basse-Terre. I therefore advise you to change accommodation and take accommodation directly on the island of Basse-Terre.

Day 1: Pointe-à-Pitre
When planning your trip to Guadeloupe, it was probably the natural rather than urban attractions that made you want to come here. Still, Guadeloupe’s biggest cityand the singular point of entry, whether by plane or boat) has enough worth-wile architecture and interesting museums to warrant some of your time. Day 2-3: Grand-Terre and/or La Désirade
Move on to Grand-Terre, the eastern half of the island, where you could base yourself on one of the popular beaches along the southern coast, like Le Gosier or Saint Anne. This would give you the choice to either lounge at the beach for a day or two, or explore the surroundings by rental car or public bus. Day 4-5: Îles des Saintes
Move on to the beautiful Îles des Saintes archipelago by taking the ferry from Pointe-à-Pitre or Trois Rivieres at the southern tip of Basse-Terre. The main island “Terre-de-Haut” is a great location for aimless exploration by foot, bicycle or scooter. I’d recommend spending some more time on Basse-Terre, getting to know the National Park and its countless waterfalls. If you have less than a week to spend on the island, I’d recommend skipping Grand-Terre altogether and concentrating on the naturally more spectacular Basse-Terre. - Grande-Terre. Best for: Dining out. While Grande-Terre has been a traveler favorite for decades due to its gorgeous southern beaches, it’s now generally accepted that it boasts Guadeloupe’s most exciting culinary choices as well.
- Basse-Terre. Best for: Hiking and Diving. Ironically Basse-Terre means ‘low land’ in French, which is a fairly poor description of this majestic stunner, whose thick foliage rises up to looming La Soufrière, the active volcano that towers over the entire island at 1467 meters and is the highest point in the Lesser Antilles.
- La Désirade. Best for: Tropical Escape. Sitting a short distance off the craggy rock nose of Grande-Terre, La Désirade is something of an archetypal Caribbean fantasy, a child’s drawing of a desert island.
- Marie-Galante. Best for: Beaches & Rum. Flat as a pancake and not particularly alluring at first glance, Marie-Galante’s real draw can be found in the wonderful beaches that attract a loyal crowd of French holidaymakers.

- Trek The Trece Des Felices. I think my jaw actually dropped when I came to the first viewpoint along the Trece Des Felices trail. The 11-kilometer hiking trail goes from Porte d’Efner (“Gate of Hell”) to Pointe Petit Negre along the coast, and then inland to the old La Mahaudière mill, which also has a dark history tied to slavery.
- Take In A Gorgeous View. By this point, I’d taken in so many stunning views in Guadeloupe that my jaw had pretty much fallen off, p articularly when I drove just 10 minutes from Porte d’Enfer to Pointe de la Grande Vigie (“Great Widow Point”), the northernmost point of Grande-Terre.
