- Avoid extreme temperatures. Exposure to extreme heat and extreme cold affect many materials adversely, and the EV’s battery is no exception. Extreme heat is best avoided in storage and in use.
- Don’t let the battery run flat. It probably comes as no surprise that letting your charge drain to 0% can be damaging to the battery. In fact, it’s best not to let the battery discharge below 20% really (known as deep discharging).
- Don’t overcharge your battery. While this may seem counter-intuitive, it’s actually better for the battery not to be charged to 100% frequently.
- Avoid rapid charging. If you’re in a hurry, there are obviously times when rapid charging is invaluable – especially if you’ve got a lot of miles to cover.
Oct 4, 2018 · Seven easy ways to prolong your electric car’s battery life. Keep the battery between 20% and 80% charged at all times. Only charge your car to 100% when absolutely necessary (for longer trips etc.) Minimise exposure to extreme temperatures. Allow the battery to cool down before recharging.

- Avoid Extremely High or Low Temperatures. The battery inside your electric vehicle prefers the same temperature range as humans. By that, I mean you don't want to let it get extremely cold or hot.
- Stay in the 20-80% Zone. Like any vehicle, you'll want to follow any guidance in the owner's manual for optimal performance and lifespan. Regarding EVs, almost every automaker suggests keeping the battery inside the 20-80% zone, but what does that mean?
- Don't Let the Battery Go to Zero. It goes without saying that you'll never want to let your electric car battery run out and go to zero. Allowing any Li-ion battery, whether in an electric vehicle, smartphone, or a power tool, to hit empty can damage the cells and decrease capacity.
- Opt for Slow Charging When Possible. As electric vehicle technology improves, we've seen charging speeds consistently increase. And while it's still slower to charge an EV than topping off a gasoline-powered car with fuel, fast charging is beginning to bridge the gap.
Sep 17, 2023 · The good news is that electric car batteries don’t degrade as quickly as some predicted, so the lifespan of an EV battery could be 10, 20 years or more, especially if it’s treated well. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce battery degradation, so fasten your seatbelts for our Top 10 tips:
Apr 29, 2024 · Most EV owners recharge overnight, either with a lower power Level 1 or Level 2 charger. Fast charging, also known as Level 3, and Tesla Superchargers, can boost batteries to up to 80% full in 30 minutes but could strain the battery if used regularly.
Mar 28, 2023 · The first and last parts of a battery take the longest to charge. Tweak your smart charger - if you have one - to ensure it stops charging at around 80%. Try not to run your EV down below 20%...
