    • Make sure the Check Spelling as You Type setting is enabled. This is the most likely culprit and simplest solution. If you haven't enabled automatic spell-checking, the tool won't function as you expect.
    • Check Word's proofing language. Word may be set to the wrong proofing language, causing it to miss errors. Make sure Word is proofing in the right language, and see if this solves the problem.
    • Check for proofing exceptions. A setting for Hide proofing errors, or other exceptions, may have been enabled in the document. The spell-check tool might not work as expected if exceptions have been made for checking the spelling or grammar.
    • Open Word in Safe Mode. A Word add-in can interfere with the spelling and grammar-checking tool, causing it to work sporadically or not at all. If you start Word in Safe Mode, add-ins aren't enabled.
  2. Apr 1, 2023 · Generic PC. I have an issue where spell check in Word (Version 2303 Build 16.0.16627.20202) simply doesn't work. I can fill a new word doc with misspelled or just made up words and nothing is underlined and if you click spelling it shows zero errors. If I copy/paste the the doc into Google Docs, all the errors show up. I've done the following:

    • Enable Microsoft Word’s Spell Check Feature. When you notice your spelling or grammar issues aren’t highlighted in your documents, the first thing to do is verify if Word’s spell checker is enabled.
    • Select the Appropriate Proofing Language in Word. You should select the appropriate proofing language in Word if your document contains multiple languages.
    • Review Word’s Proofing Exceptions. Word offers a feature to disable spelling and grammar checker in selected documents. You must ensure your current document isn’t part of that exception list.
    • Open Word in Safe Mode and Check if Word Add-Ins Are Causing the Issue. Word allows you to install third-party add-ins to the app. Sometimes, one or more of these add-ins causes problems.
