- Enabling the IGMPv3 host stack ensures that hosts on a LAN can leverage SSM by enabling the device to initiate IGMPv3 joins, such as in environments where fast channel change is required in a SSM deployments. To support of the IGMPv3 Host Stack feature, you must configure the INCLUDE mode capability on the IGMPv3 host stack for SSM groups.

First, we’ll enable SSM on all routers. If you do not specify a group, then the 232.0.0.0/8 range will be used. If you do try a (*, G) join for any group in the SSM range, then it will be dropped. R1,R2 and R3: ip pim ssm default. The next step is to enable IGMPv3 on the source and receiver: R1(config)#interface fastEthernet 0/0 .
Apr 16, 2021 · To enable SSM, you require to configure IGMPv3 on all your network where multicast traffic need to flow. Since I had a opportunity to take packet captures during SSM testing, I thought to write a post about IGMPv3 using those captures. IGMP version 3 defines in RFC3376 (2002) and most of the details of this post directly come from that RFC.
The source-specific multicast (SSM) model allows IGMPv3 hosts to specify the multicast sources which they want to receive data from. However, some hosts can only run IGMPv1 or IGMPv2. To enable these hosts to use the SSM service, configure IGMP SSM mapping on the switch.
Let’s explain the steps one by one. First of all, let’s explain a Multicast Group Join. Multicast receivers send IGMPv3 Membership Report to the address 224.0.0.22. This is the address of all version 3 capable routers. This report is sent with an empty EXCLUDE list.
R1(config-if)#ip igmp version 3. Our router requires multicast routing, and PIM should be enabled on the interface. The default version of IGMP is 2, so we’ll change it to version 3. Before we let H1 join a multicast group, let’s enable debugging on both devices: R1 & H1#debug ip igmp. IGMP debugging is on.
