Titian (born 1488/90, Pieve di Cadore, Republic of Venice [Italy]—died August 27, 1576, Venice) was the greatest Italian Renaissance painter of the Venetian school. He was recognized early in his own lifetime as a supremely talented painter, and his reputation has in the intervening centuries never suffered a decline.

When he was about 10 years old, Titian arrived in Venice, then one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Titian started his artistic training in the workshop of the mosaicist Sebastiano Zuccato. He later briefly joined Gentile Bellini’s workshop.

Sep 14, 2020 · Titian (c. 1487-1576 CE), real name Tiziano Vecelli (or Vecellio), was an Italian Renaissance painter who during his lifetime was considered the finest of the Venice school of artists. In a long career working for dukes, kings, and popes, Titian produced a large number of paintings, mostly with a religious theme, a mythological theme or portraits.

Jan 5, 2020 · Even when Titian was already an established, well-off artist in his sixties, he did not stop cultivating his painting style. In fact, according to historical sources, Titian became more perfectionist in his old age, keeping canvases for up to ten years at a time.
Titian had first met the emperor in 1530, when he was crowned in Bologna. Although he made several short visits such as this to towns in northern Italy, he was reluctant to journey far from Venice and he turned down Charles's invitation to go to Spain to paint portraits of the royal family.

Titian also painted works with mythological subjects for domestic settings; he often called these “poesie,” likening them to visual poetry. Of these, some of the most beautiful were painted as a series of Bacchanals for Duke Alfonso I d’Este of Ferrara from around 1518.
