Aug 28, 2020 · The story is set in Louisiana, in the depths of the Great Depression in 1933. In the opening episode, Nathan Lee Morgan (Paul Winfield) and his elder son, twelve-year-old David Lee (Kevin Hooks), are out after dark in woodland near their home, hunting a raccoon. It eludes them, despite the tenacious efforts of their dog, Sounder.
In 1933, the Morgans are an African-American family living as sharecroppers in rural Louisiana, raising sugar cane for their white landlord. David Lee, the oldest son, is a bright boy who loves to hunt with his father, Nathan Lee, and their dog Sounder, but is only able to attend school sporadically in between helping his mother Rebecca on the farm.
Synopsis. Rural Louisiana, 1933. Its twilight. A father is walking across open grassland with his son and a hound dog. The father, Nathan Lee/ Nathan (Paul Winfield), is carrying a rifle; the boy, David Lee/ David (Kevin Hooks in his first feature), holds a lantern. Soon its night.
In Louisiana in 1933, the Morgan family, Nathan Lee, Rebecca and children David Lee, Earl and Josie Mae, suffers the myriad deprivations of the Depression, barely surviving by sharecropping for demanding store owner Mr. Perkins. Early one evening, Nathan takes David and their beloved dog Sounder to hunt raccoon for dinner.
