The London and North Eastern Railway Class P2 was a class of 2-8-2 steam locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for working heavy express trains over the harsh Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line. As they were to serve on Scottish expresses, they were given famous names from Scottish lore.
To be named Prince of Wales, the new P2 Class locomotive will operate across the UK and justify the claims that the original Gresley design was Britain’s most powerful passenger steam locomotive. Support the Trust. Get on board with us for as little as the price of a pint or a cup of coffee.

The following details are for the P2/3 and P2/2 (streamlined) variants.Mechanically these were the same before streamlining, although No. 2001 "Cock o'the North" was fitted with LentzR.C. motion with 8" poppet steam and 9" poppet exhaust valves. The total heating surface was also slightly larger (3490.5 sq.ft). This was converted to match the other...
All of the P2s were rebuilt as A2/2, and neither the P2s nor the A2/2s survived into preservation. However, there are currently two projects to build a new P2. The P2 Steam Locomotive Company Ltd has been founded by many of the people who built No. 60163 Tornado, and intends to build a P2 with the original Cock o' the Northstreamlining.A second pro...

BUILDING A LEGEND: The Gresley ‘P2’ 2-8-2. Modern design methods and a brand-new facility are helping to shape construction of Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive in Darlington.
Apr 7, 2022 · The P2 Steam Locomotive Company has released the latest update on progress to build a class P2 2-8-2 Mikado. Sir Nigel Gresley designed P2s to haul 600-ton trains on the arduous Edinburgh to Aberdeen route and were the most powerful express passenger locomotives to operate in the UK.
This locomotive was scrapped in 1964. Public interest in seeing a new Gresley class P2 become a reality sooner rather than later is high with almost 900 people having already signed up to the ‘P2 for the price of a pint of beer per week’ (£10 per month or more) Covenant scheme since its launch.
