Sep 16, 2014 · Unlike the huge costs to build the Country Club of Detroit, the “Little Club” board requested construction costs not exceed $225,000. Prominent residential architect and designer of the Henry Ford Museum, Robert O. Derrick, was selected to design the new Clubhouse.
Given that the Grosse Pointe Club (in 1927) cost close to $225,000 (around $3.8m today) it shows the magnitude of the project. The building was constructed from pressed brick, timber, plaster with a distinctive variegated slate roof – a fundamental part of Tudor Revival architecture during this era.
The Grosse Pointe Club responded to these events as best it could. Initiation fees and dues were halved and former members could use the dock, pool and courts for a seasonal fee of $25 plus a per hour or per diem charge for courts and pool.
After several budget cutbacks and cost overruns, the clubhouse officially opened on July 4, 1929. The original clubhouse included a ball room and several dining rooms, with the largest being able to seat 250.
However, the grand building had come at a huge cost. It was reported in the Grosse Pointe Civic News (August 1929), the cost of constructing the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was well over half-million dollars.
Oct 28, 2014 · The new architects were given urgent orders to scale back the design, to get costs down to $350,000. In 1928, plans were finalized and construction of the clubhouse, grounds and harbor got underway at an estimated $380,000. The new harbor was opened for use that same year.
