Roughly 2.5 million students annually are members of organized extramural sports teams (Pennington, 2008; Student-athletes, n.d.). Approximately 500,000 students compete in NCAA sanctioned sports (Varsity Sports) and around 2 million students annually participate in a Club Sport programs (NIRSA; Pennington, 2008).
In addition, “inactive (completing under 30 minutes per week) students made up 13.8% of the population, with 9.8% classified as fairly active (between 31 and 150 minutes)” (UK Active Research Institute/BUCS/Sport England, 2020, p.10).
