May 6, 2015 · But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
In describing Michal’s maternal traits, the midrash says that she raised her dead sister Merab’s five sons. Merab was married to Adriel the Meholathite and bore five sons. When Merab passed away, Michal raised them as if they were her own offspring, and therefore they are attributed to Michal.
Adriel. A son of Barzillai, married Merab, daughter of Saul, who had been promised to David, 1 Samuel 18:19. Adriel had five sons by her, who were delivered up to the Gibeonites, to be put to death before the Lord, to avenge the cruelty of Saul their grandfather against the Gibeonites.
According to 1 Samuel 18:19, Saul married his daughter Merab to Adriel. However, 2 Samuel 21:8, in the Masoretic Text , records that Michal , another daughter of Saul "brought up" [R.V. "bare"] five sons with Adriel.
Merab had five sons by him, who were delivered to the Gibeonites, and hanged before the Lord, 2 Samuel 21:8,9. The text intimates that the five men delivered to the Gibeonites were sons of Michal; but see ADRIEL.
She is also one of six children by his primary wife, Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz (compare 1 Sam 31:2, 1 Chr 8:33; 9:39; these note the fourth son, Abinadab, who is not mentioned in 1 Sam 14:49). The genealogical summary serves two functions in the larger narrative of Saul.
