Quick Facts. Taos is located in Northern New Mexico in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountain. Home to the Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark.
The peak is located in Taos county, 70 miles (113 km) north-northeast of Santa Fe, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and within Carson National Forest. It was named for Major George M. Wheeler, who surveyed the area during the 1870s.
