Oxford English Dictionary Second edition on CD-ROM Version 4.0: Includes 500,000 words with 2.5 million source quotations, 7,000 new words and meanings. Includes Vocabulary from OED 2nd Edition and all 3 Additions volumes.
Currently there are almost 850,000 definitions in the dictionary, and we’re updating or adding around 15,000 definitions each year. It’s a long-term, large-scale project, active since the second half of the 19th century, and it’s a cornerstone of Oxford University Press’s educational mission.
The OED is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and usage of over 500,000 words and phrases past and present, from across the English-speaking world. It is an essential tool for academic researchers who need rich English language data.
The dictionary is not based on the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) – it is a separate dictionary which strives to represent faithfully the current usage of English words. The Revised Second Edition contains 355,000 words, phrases, and definitions, including biographical references and thousands of encyclopaedic entries.
