    June 25, 1997:The NHL’s board of governors approves the applications of Nashville (to begin play in 1998-99), Atlanta (1999-2000), Columbus and St. Paul (both 2000-01), increasing league membership to 30 teams. The $320 million in membership fees was divided among the other 26 members.

    1999:The league introduces the “overtime loss” and 4-on-4 overtime. In 2005-06 the league dropped ties altogether, and in 2015-16 it moved to a 3-on-3 overtime format.

    2000: The Hockey Co. agrees to a deal to become the NHL’s first leaguewide jersey maker; teams had previously brokered their own deals. Reebok (2005-17), Adidas(2017-24) and Fanatics (starting with the 2024-25 season) follow.

    Feb. 16, 2005:Bettman announces the cancellation of the 2004-05 season, the first time a major North American league has lost a full season to a labor dispute. The lockout ends on July 15, 2005, with a new CBA that includes a hard salary cap.

    Oct. 1, 2007: Eleven years after the launch of NHL.com, the league launches NHL Network, initially as part of an agreement with Comcast.
