Nine villages and fifty unincorporated hamlets make up the Long Island Town of Brookhaven. The first inhabitants of the Town of Brookhaven were the Setauket and Unkechaug tribes.
As hamlets, Brookhaven and South Haven have no formal boundaries. All would say that they are bounded on the south by the Great South Bay and most would say that Brookhaven’s western boundary is the Village of Bellport; and that South Haven’s eastern boundary is the Carman’s River and Shirley.
Founded as a group of agricultural hamlets in the mid-17th century, Brookhaven first expanded as a major center of shipbuilding in the 19th century. Its proximity to New York City facilitated the establishment of resort communities, followed by a post-war population boom. In the 2020 census record, Brookhaven contained 485,773 people. [4]

Stretching from the North Shore to the South Shore of Long Island, the Town of Brookhaven encompasses eight incorporated villages and 50 unincorporated hamlets. Its population of 493,294 people makes it the most populous town in Suffolk County, and with so much to offer, it’s easy to see why.
The two hamlets of Brookhaven and South Haven have been closely interlinked since earliest colonial times, and the names Brookhaven (or Fire Place or Brook Haven) and South Haven has been applied to geographic neighborhoods in both hamlets at various times.
