Dialogue makes a story engaging, if you make it clear who's speaking. Learn how to structure and punctuate direct speech in fiction with BBC Bitesize KS3 English.
- Use Quotation Marks to Indicate Spoken Word. Whenever someone is speaking, their words should be enclosed in double quotation marks. Example: “Let’s go to the beach.”
- Dialogue Tags Stay Outside the Quotation Marks. Dialogue tags attribute a line of dialogue to one of the characters so that the reader knows who is speaking.
- Use a Separate Sentence for Actions That Happen Before or After the Dialogue. If an action occurs before or after the lines of dialogue, it should be given its own sentence.

The length of your personal story should be equivalent to the length of your speech. Let me explain. Most of the speeches I do are 90 minutes. So if you have a 90-minute speech, you can have a 16- or 17-minute story. But let that story breathe a bit.
If you've had the experience of a story failing to fire, yet you know it was relevant to your audience, and your speech, maybe the way you introduce it needs fine tuning. The best storytelling setups sneak up on an audience capturing their attention before they've had an opportunity to zone out.
