As the time nears midnight, you start to knock on your own front door, 22 times. The 22nd knock has to be the stroke of midnight, and you then blow the candle out and relight it. Doing this is said to invite the Midnight Man into your home, where you must walk around in complete darkness with the candle as your source of light.
