The call is made but before E.T.s crew arrives to pick him up, the alien falls ill, as does Elliot because of their telepathic link.
The lead agent, Keys, asks for Elliott's help to save E.T., stating that meeting aliens was his childhood dream and he considers E.T's arrival a genuine miracle. However, as the psychic bond between Elliott and E.T. fades, E.T. dies while Elliott returns back to normal.
Elliott immediately takes a liking to E.T. and takes care of the frightened creature by hiding him in his closet and feeding him. The following day, Elliott shows E.T. to his older brother Michael, and his younger sister Gertie, and he makes his sibling swear to keep the mysterious creature a secret.
