Mar 23, 2023 · How does it all work? As the speedometer cable rotates, it turns the magnet at the same speed. The spinning magnet creates a fluctuating magnetic field inside the speed cup and, by the laws of electromagnetism, that means electric currents flow inside the cup as well. In effect, the speed cup turns into a kind of electricity generator.
A flexible drive cable inside a flexible tube links a small magnet inside the speedometer to the gearbox output shaft. The magnet rotates with the shaft and its magnetic field attracts a metal drum to turn the speedometer needle against the force of a hair spring.
The speedometer cable is driven from the gearbox, and curves smoothly up through the engine compartment and the bulkhead to connect with the back of the speedometer. Speedometer failure is likely to be caused by a fault in the cable that runs from the gearbox to the back of the speedometer gauge.
When the vehicle is in motion, a speedometer gear assembly turns a speedometer cable, which then turns the speedometer mechanism itself. A small permanent magnet affixed to the speedometer cable interacts with a small aluminium cup (called a speedcup) attached to the shaft of the pointer on the analogue speedometer instrument.

If we take a look at the working principle of the old analog speedometers, there is a cable that extends from the back of the speedometer dashboard to the gearbox of our car. This is the cable that transmits the rotational speed of the gears with a mechanism to the speedometer dial plate.
How does a speedometer cable work? The drive cable is wound tightly around the mandrel, or central wire, where it is then connected to gears on the transmission. As the wheels rotate, the transmission also turns, and the drive cable receives the information where it can be sent to the gauge.
