Vladek Spiegelman. Vladek is in many ways a baffling character. In his story of surviving World War II and the Holocaust, he is truly heroic. But in the present day, he is high-strung and disagreeable. Most notably, Vladek is extremely tight with his money. At one point, he returns opened packages of cereal and crackers to the store for a refund.
Vladek sends Richieu to live with relatives in Zawiercie. But when the Nazis come to Zawiercie to take the Jews to the camps, Richieu is poisoned by his aunt in order to avoid being killed at the camps. Vladek and Anja hide with other family members in various bunkers to avoid being sent to the camps, but they are found out.
Character Analysis. “Mainly I remember arguing with him… and being told that I couldn’t do anything as well as he could,” Art tells his therapist. “No matter what I accomplish, it doesn’t seem like much compared to surviving Auschwitz” (II.2.34). Given what we learn about Vladek in Maus, it’s easy to see how Art feels.
Vladek has remarried a woman named Mala since the suicide of Art's mother Anja in 1968. [7] Art asks Vladek to recount his Holocaust experiences. [6] Vladek tells of his time in the Polish city of Częstochowa [8] and how he came to marry into Anja's wealthy family in 1937 and move to Sosnowiec to become a manufacturer.

Vladek knows the basics of repairing shoes, but when a Nazi guard brings in a badly torn boot, he is forced to smuggle it out of the workshop to a trained shoemaker working in a different part of the camp.
