Dr. King Schultz (1803 - May 5, 1859) was a German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter who freed Django and helped him rescue his wife. Schultz was eventually killed in a shootout when he shot Calvin Candie in the heart with his sleevegun. It's estimated that Schultz is in his late 40's to early 50's during the events of the movie.

Schultz comes up with this convoluted con job, basically because he wants to play a prank on Candie. It’s a plan made by someone whose intelligence and skills have sheltered him from ever being really challenged. This is why Django can keep up his poker face and King finds it harder and harder.
In the very beginning he frees Django (for selfish means, admittedly), but he does let the remaining slaves kill their master and make off for safer territory. He's very vocal throughout the movie about his distaste for the treatment of slaves and their masters.
Feeling responsible for Django, Schultz agrees to help him find and rescue Broomhilda, and Schultz trains Django to become a bounty hunter. They return to Texas, where Django collects his first bounty, keeping the handbill as a memento and for good luck.
