Riddick's overt violence was somewhat toned down in the film, and his desire for a ship was meant to show that what he really wanted all along was to return home.
Though sent to kill Riddick, confused of his leader's sudden fear, Vaako uses it as an excuse to get close enough to assassinate Zhylaw to become Lord Marshal. However, once the chance to kill Zhylaw presents itself, Riddick beats Vaako to the punch and becomes Lord Marshal.
