Nate is a good guy, clearly kind and emotionally stable, which is exactly why him approaching Alex romantically is a big mistake, since Alex herself is nowhere close to any type of stability. She needs help from people with no strings attached at all.
I think Nate existed to show how Alex was breaking intergenerational cycles of abuse/neglect. It would have been very easy for her to accept all the help he offered, move in with him permanently and have a relationship with him...
Nate refused to stick around and watch Alex continue in her self destructive behavior. This was cemented when she slept with Sean. Feelings aside, Nate really cared for Alex.
