Granville Sharp. One of the 12 men who formed the Committee for Effecting the Abolition of the African Slave Trade in 1787 at 2 George Yard was Granville Sharp (from 1735 to 1813). Sharp was a civil servant who devoted much of his life to campaigning against slavery.
Sharp died in 1813, two decades before the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire. In addition to his abolitionist cause, Sharp also championed the creation of a free colony in Sierra Leone, which encouraged black people in Britain to settle in west Africa.
