- Hint: leaders either divide people or unite them. There are two ways to lead people and drive impact. One way is by dividing people. Create a mutual enemy and lead a crusade to conquer it.
- The Divide And Conquer Approach. The Latin phrase “Divide et impera” is as old as politics and war. The divide your enemy so you can reign approach is attributed to Julius Cesar — he successfully applied it to conquer Gaul twenty-two centuries ago (no typo).
- The Unite & Build Approach. The opposite of divide and conquer is ‘unite and build.’ Builders see winning as a reward for doing what’s right. They focus on creating a legacy; financial results are a result of making the world a better place too.
- The Two Sides of Leaders. “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” — Aristotle. Builders inspire people to follow a bigger mission; Conquerors want followers — they want people to follow them.
- A Common Pain is a shared problem that motivates different people/groups to work together in ways that could otherwise seem counterintuitive. Value alliances “exist at the intersection of self-interest and common interest.”
- A Convener of Stature is a respected and influential presence who can bring people to the table and, when necessary, keep them there. “The inability to turn down an offer is one sign that you’re dealing with a convener of stature.”
- Representatives of Substance. The collaborative participants must bring the right mix of experience and expertise for legitimacy and have the authority to make decisions.
- Committed Leaders are individuals who possess the skill, creativity, dedication, and tenacity to move an alliance forward even when it hits the inevitable rough patches.
