- Mimic Your Favorite Books. Okay, I already know some of you will panic about this. No one wants to sound derivative, I know. No one wants to sound like someone else; we want to have our own voice.
- Practice. You can do this. I know you can because every single writer on earth does it. You already have done it, in fact; you learned to speak by listening to those around you, and in time, you developed your own way of using your native tongue.
Jan 19, 2017 · Make notes. Make notes about what you’ve read as you go along. If you can’t bring yourself to write in the margins, have a notebook with you and make notes on things you like and dislike, whether it’s a description, plot point, or character trait.
The goal as you read like a writer is to locate what you believe are the most important writerly choices represented in the text—choices as large as the overall structure or as small as a single word used only once—to consider the effect of those choices on potential readers (including yourself).
