How Do You Take Good Prom Pictures? In this section, I’ll give you some tips to get good prom pics whether you’re a professional photographer or not. I’ll also include some prom picture ideas to get kickstart your creativity. 1. Depth of field
- Ask the Teens If They Want Anything Special. Before you wrap up the prom photos, ask the teens if there is anything that they wish for you to photograph.
- Give Parents Time to Document the Event as Well. You are the official photographer for the prom photo. But you should still allow mom and dad to have their time to document the moment.
- Use a Variety of Props to Make the Photo Shoot Fun. Are you wondering what props to use? Using props can make the prom session even more fun! Use streamers or confetti pops to add to the excitement.
- Keep the Session Quick to Avoid Boredom. Teens are excited to enjoy themselves at prom. This also means, more often than not, they aren’t too concerned with spending lots of time taking photos.
- Choose a clean background. If possible, choose an outdoor setting with some greenery—trees, bushes, anything with green or flowers. Place the subjects several feet in front of the background.
- Fall back and zoom. To compose your image, you can either zoom out and get close or zoom in and step back. Try the latter. By stepping back, you shorten the facial features and create a more flattering image of the subjects’ faces.
- Stabilize the camera. If you have a tripod or monopod, use it. If not, set the camera on a stable object. The worst possible way to shoot is to hold your camera out in front of you with two hands.
- Know when to use flash. In general, don’t use on-camera flash indoors. If you have an SLR camera with a separate flash, you can consider bouncing if off of the wall or ceiling.

- Find the Best Light for Prom Pics. Your best light for prom photos is... shade. Yeah, we know; it seems like it might be dark or too moody. The truth is, though, bright sunlight casts weird shadows on people's faces and isn't the most flattering.
- Pick the Perfect Background. The background you choose matters. We're not telling you to hang up a sheet or anything. Just look for a spot that doesn't have a ton of clutter (this means people walking around, cars, a random grill or patio chair, that kind of thing).
- Get Some Full-Length Solo Photos. Finding the perfect prom dress or outfit isn't easy, so you need a photo that really shows it off. This should be a full-length shot, and the pose is very important.
