Welcome to the official IGN Wiki Guide and Walkthrough for FIFA 22. In this section, we'll provide a few tips to help players just starting out get used to FIFA 22's gameplay.

Compared to last year, this season (at least at launch) feels a bit slower. That means careful passing and smart movement are going to be your best friend. On top of that, goalkeepers are noticeably improved, which means you need to learn where and how to use your repertoire of shots if you want to bang in the goals.

FIFA 21 didn't present many opportunities for crossing to play a major part in your buildup or scoring chances. That's changed with FIFA 22. This year, crossing feels like a viable attack option. By pressing Square (X on Xbox), you can send balls into the box and use your strikers to attack the net through the air.

On top of that, switching play from one side of the field to the other can leave your opponent's defense out of position. Whip that ball from your left fullback to your right-winger and watch the defense struggle to keep up with your movement. Obviously, it's not a cure-all, but crossing being back on the menu means you can have a more versatile attack and keep your opponent's guessing.

In general, the aerial game feels much more deadly this year. If you have pacey strikers up top, use L1+Triange (LB+Y on Xbox) to send a through ball over the top of the defense. This lets your striker run onto the ball and get in behind the defense for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper.

Through balls are always deadly in FIFA, but early in the year, lobbed through balls are particularly devastating in FUT. It's much easier to catch defenders out of position and give yourself a great shot on goal.

You don't need to become a skill move fiend to have success in FIFA 22. Of course, you can bother to learn all of the fancy tricks in the game, but as long as you master a few, you'll be in a good spot. We'd recommend getting comfortable with easy skill moves like the fake shot, ball roll, bridge, and drag back. Knowing these gives you plenty of attack options. Here are the controls for each skill:

•Fake Shot: Circle (B on Xbox) then X (A) + a Direction. Use this to throw a defender off and open space for a shot.

•Ball Roll: Hold Right Stick Left or Right. This keeps the ball close and opens space for a shot when near the box.

•Bridge: Double Tap R1 (RB). While not as powerful as last year, this lets you dart around defenders with pacey players.

With goalkeepers given a big buff in FIFA 22, you need to know where and how to shoot. Outside of the box Finesse Shots are great this year. To do this, get a player with a high Curve and then use R1 + Circle (RB + B) from outside of the box. If you can master timed finishing, these shots can be even more powerful. However, that's a bit advanced, so only look into it after you've been playing for a while.

You can also use Finesse Shots in the box, but we actually prefer Low Driven Shots. These keep the ball low and seem to get past the keeper fairly regularly. To do this, simply press L1 + R1 + Circle (LB + RB + B).

There isn't a magic formation that's going to do everything you want. Instead, you need to find something that suits your playstyle. Personally, we like either 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-1-2 (2). The former is a great defensive formation that lets you use CDMs to help cover your defense. That gives you the option of bringing on attacking fullbacks like Theo Hernandez or Alphonso Davies to help in the attack.

The latter gives you a stronger attack in the center of the park because you have two strikers and a CAM. All of that pressure at the top of the box can be difficult for defenses to deal with. That said, you need to try out some formations and find something that suits your wants and needs.

Some players are going to hate us for saying this, but when you're just starting out, try not to defend with your centerbacks. The AI defense is usually pretty solid in the back, so you're better off attacking the player with the ball with a CDM. This gives you a bit of a safety net if you mess up.

As you get more comfortable in defense, you'll want to start switching to your CBs more often. Using them lets you get the ball back more quickly and convincingly. However, learning the timing of tackling does take some time to learn.

By holding down R1 (RB) on defense, you can bring a second man over to attack the player with the ball. This puts more pressure on the offense as you start to overload them. You can also use this to pressure the ball with an AI defender while you close off a passing lane with the player you're directly controlling. It's an exceptional tool that mig...
