At the beginning of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, you'll be able to choose on of three Pokemon from Professor Elm -- Cyndaquil, Totodile or Chikorita. The choice you make, of course, is entirely up to you. Remember, all three Pokemon will stay their "Pure" Type as they evolve.
Choosing a Cyndaquil, in our estimation, makes the game easiest for you. Of course, you won't be at a huge disadvantage if you choose one of the other two instead (indeed, they will give you advantages in other situations).
Which ever starter you choose, your rival will choose the type that is stronger.
Chikorita is the dino-like grass Pokemon. It will eventually grow up to the stonewall Meganium. Meganium has high Defense and Special Defense stats, making this Pokemon great for defensive tactics.
Cyndaquil is the little mouse-like fire Pokemon. It will eventually grow up to the strong Typhlosion. Typhlosion has high Special Attack and Speed stats, making this Pokemon great for quick, strong special attacks.
Totodile is the small crocodile-like water Pokemon. It will eventually grow up to the powerful Feraligatr (the game ran out of characters and has to cut the e or o between t and r). Feraligatr has high Attack and Defense stats, making this Pokemon great for head on attacks.
- Begin your "HeatGold" or "SoulSilver" game by going downstairs and talking to your mom.
- Go next door to Professor Elm's house. He will let you choose one of the three starters. Choose one and then head out for Mr. Pokemon's house as Professor Elm asks you to.
- Turn on your second DS with the other Pokemon game inside it. Make sure that you have a Pokemon in your party that you don't mind losing forever. Go into a Pokecenter and go upstairs and join a Union room.
- Conduct a trade between the two games, trading the Pokemon you don't mind losing for the starter Pokemon.
After obtaining all 16 Badges and defeating Red at Mt. Silver, you can receive one of the three starter Pokemon from both Kanto and Hoenn.
The first gift Pokémon you get given is an Egg of Togepi. This Egg is the Mysterious Egg you get sent to collect at the start. After you beat Falkner at the Violet Gym, you will get a call stating that Professor Elm's aide has the Egg for you.
