What should you do if you have a passion?
- Cultivate more self-awareness. When you know yourself, you know your passions. "Self-awareness is an important step to figuring out your passion," Spinelli says.
- Make a vision board. Making a vision board anytime you're looking to change or shift something in your life is a powerful way to paint a picture of what you want, and finding your passion is no exception.
- Get out of your comfort zone. As Albert Einstein once said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So, if you're operating the same way every day and finding you're not able to discover your passion, something clearly needs to change!
- Notice what inspires you. Speaking of inspiration, Page and Spinelli both advise paying attention to anything and everything in your life that sparks something in you.
- Be curious, pay attention, and be open to new things. Open your eyes to your world around you. Watch for things that inspire or interest you. Are there any activities going on around you, that you’d love to get involved in?
- Watch for needs and causes that you are passionate about. The passions that add the most to our lives and the lives of others are those that help to (literally) make the world a better place.
- Look back at your childhood for inspiration. During my season of burnout, I saw some Cuban salsa dancers performing. As I watched them joyfully spinning and swooping around the stage, I remembered that I’d once been a dance-obsessed little girl.
- Notice and pursue activities that make you lose track of time. Losing yourself in an activity (aka “flow”) is a big clue to something you should spend more time doing.
- Clear out the distractions. One reason you may not know your passion: you haven’t given yourself the time and space to pursue it. Now, many of the distractions in our lives — picking up kids from daycare, writing a proposal for work, dealing with a burst pipe in the basement — are non-negotiable; they come with being a human in the world.
- Think of a passion as like an internship. Most internships serve as a trial run for a job — while you’re acquiring skills and knowledge, you’re also trying to see if you want to commit.
- Be patient. Don’t expect to fall in love immediately. “A reason why passions take time to develop is that at the very, very beginning of things, we’re all clumsy and awkward and the learning curve is very steep,” says Duckworth.
- Stay motivated by remembering the bigger picture. Every passion has its share of less exciting moments. For playing the viola, it may be practicing scales for the umpteenth time.
