Verse 4. - Answer not a fool according to his folly. Do not lower yourself to the fool's level by answering his silly questions or arguing with him as if he were a sensible man. Lest thou also be like unto him; lest you be led to utter folly yourself or to side with him in his opinions and practices.
Jan 31, 2023 · Instructing a fool is pointless because his speech is full of foolishness (Proverbs 15:2, 14) and he does not want wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 18:2). The futility of trying to impart wisdom to a fool is the basis of Proverbs 26:4-5, which tell us how to answer a fool.
It is wise to answer the fool when the answer is meant to relay helpful truth in a loving way. The fool may adjust his thinking and accept the truth. Giving a reasonable, respectful answer (1 Peter 3:15) can help others appreciate the glory of God.
