Democratically
- Book clubs choose books democratically, with members suggesting titles and taking a vote, and the ones with the most votes win. Some clubs rotate the book choice among members, while others use online polls for efficient voting.

Who chooses the Book Club Books?
Aug 26, 2024 · The most common way for book clubs to pick their books is by voting, which was used by almost half of the book clubs in our survey.
- Poll the group– Everyone has that book (or 60) they’ve just been dying to read. Give group members a voice by opening the list of books up to them. You’ll find there’s a lot of overlap so you’ll be able to prioritize those books.
- Group voting– Once you have a good running list of possible selections, have members vote. You can do this with an online survey, Facebook poll, or in-person.
- Paperbacks– The book club I’m loyal to has a strict paperback rule. They don’t want to alienate those people who may not be able to dish out $30 every month to participate.
- Consider genres– Lots of book clubs that started out as “anything goes” break out into more focused groups. My own book club has introduced a “history” group, featuring historical non-fiction.

Start with our huge list of the best book club books. It includes at least one book per month for the past few years. We use magic to divine what we think will be hot with book clubs this year. 7. Look at Book Club Challenges
One thing that is really great about a book club challenge is that it forces to read more diversely. This can mean getting outside of your normal genre, reading about other races and cultures, or finding books on topics that you wouldn’t normally consider. Even if your book club members don’t want to commit to a huge year-long book challenge, you can get some really fun ideas by simply trolling the prompts from the challenges and picking one. 8. Use your Library’s Resources
You local library can be a great resource for figuring out how to choose books for book club. You can simply ask your Librarian what’s hot with clubs right now. Many libraries also have “book club kits” which include reader guides and enough books for each member to read. And some libraries have curated displays of trade paperbacks. The displays usually include multiple copies of books that have been popular in the last year or two.

- Do choose for good discussions. Some books don't offer a lot to chew on in the way of discussion. They may be great reads (romances, spy thrillers) but don't have much to talk about.
- Don't choose for the whole year. It ties you into a 12-month-long rigid schedule with no flexibility to add exciting new works you might learn about. And it's unfair for those who miss the one meeting when selections are made.
- Do choose 2 or 3 at a time. This allows members to read at their own pace. It's especially helpful for those who travel or miss a meeting or two.
