In Java Edition many animals generate upon initial chunk creation. These spawns occur only once per chunk. They are not affected by the / gamerule doMobSpawning command. One in ten newly-generated chunks attempts to generate animal mobs, usually in packs of up to 4 of the same species.
Jan 23, 2011 · Unlike monsters, animals do not spontaneously despawn, except for wild ocelots and wolves (which can despawn only when they are hostile). They do not despawn even if the player is far from them. Note that squids have different spawning criteria then other mobs.
May 23, 2011 · I've read the information on the Wiki with the Spawn page, and from what I can glean from that page, the following rules should apply for spawning passive mobs: Mob Cap of 15 passive creatures in a 17x17 area (unlimited height... not quite a chunk but slightly larger)
Basic farming. Round up at least two animals of the same kind into a pen. Fences are nice, but you can also dig a hole 2 blocks deep so that the animals cannot jump out, and you want the hole to be plenty wide. Breed them until you have a reasonable number. Kill some of them, and get resources.
