The best method for packing for family travel is to utilise a travel packing checklist. There are plenty of printable packing lists that suit different types of travel, from general travel, to more specific checklists aimed at certain destinations or travelling with kids.
- Stay Safe. Our first priority when going anywhere with our kids is safety. How to travel with kids safely is also what we get asked about the most! In most places, a little common sense goes a long way.
- Set Expectations with Kids. One of the things we have learned over our family travel is that kids need to know what is coming, and what to expect. The more we outline for the kids what to expect from the next few days or weeks, the better they roll with the bumps along the way.
- Everything Takes Longer when Traveling with Kids. Everything takes longer with kids! A simple bathroom stop can stretch to twenty minutes. Getting through security at the airport, or verifying documentation for four people at check-in takes a lot longer than when there were just two of us.
- Get Assigned Airplane Seats. When booking air travel, pre-book your seats when you can. Many US airlines do not guarantee to seat families together if you choose the lowest fare class.
- Timing is everything. Last-minute deals don't tend to exist during the school holidays, and those that do are usually to less desirable places. If your kids are in school then you’ll know their term dates far in advance; use this information to book months or even years ahead, when prices are still relatively low due to the lack of demand.
- Use your parenting networks. Baby groups may have kept you sane through the newborn haze — but that collective wisdom extends beyond moral support and diaper-changing techniques.
- Take your family off the beaten track. It’s basic economics: the higher the demand, the higher the price. One solution? Get off the beaten track. Avoid tourist hotspots and opt instead for somewhere less trendy or famous; think rural Lazio over Tuscany, Adelaide over Sydney and Maine over California.
- Turn the journey into an adventure. Save money on a night’s accommodation and create memories you will all treasure by traveling to your destination (or between two points on your itinerary) in a different way.

- Break your itinerary up by morning, afternoon, and evening. If you’re using our free printable itineraries, you’ll notice I’ve done this for you already.
- Keep nearby activities and eateries together on the same days. This seems like a big duh, but if you try to plan your activities by focusing each day in a different area of town, it will save you a lot of time and stress in the long run.
- Start by filling in places you must visit at a specific day or time. If there’s anything you need (or want) to visit on a specific day (i.e. Sunday morning brunch, Saturday farmer’s market, Monday free museum admission), add this to your itinerary first.
- Plan to visit some of the more well-known and busier sites on weekdays. Particularly first thing in the morning if possible. You’ll be more likely to have the whole place to yourself or, at the very least, avoid mega-long lines.
