- Connect 4. I can’t think of a more fun way to teach something than with a game! This would be a great thing to have around for early finishers. This is probably the most fun hands-on way to learn about fractions!
- Lego. If you’ve got lego blocks handy (in your classroom or at home), they are the perfect material for demonstrating fractions. You can use the parts to demonstrate halves, quarters, and eighths of a whole.
- Playdough. Playdough is one the best hands-on ways for students to learn Math concepts. You can challenge your students to create shapes and cut them into fractions.
- Dominoes. You probably have dominoes lying around in your classroom, but I bet you hadn’t thought of using them for teaching fractions! You could ask your students to draw the fractions that they see on the dominoes.

- Use visual representations. The concept of a “fraction” is abstract, and visualizing part vs. whole is a developmental skill not fully in place for some kids until middle or high school.
- Use grid-based visuals. Anytime I can provide an image to go with the concept I’m teaching, I know I’m going to be in better shape. One way I do this when teaching fractions is to ask students to create the visual on paper.
- Play board games. Games serve more than one purpose. First, they make what could be a dry and boring topic to your students more fun and interesting. They also often provide that visual component that is especially helpful for some students.
- Turn to tech. Another strategy I like to use to help kids build fluency with their fractions skills is to let them practice digitally. Apps and other online resources can help solidify concepts.

Jan 5, 2024 · The teaching of fractions begins all the way back in Year 1 where students are expected to find fractions of shapes and appropriate quantities. In Year 2, they must be familiar with ⅓, ¼, ²⁄₄, and ¾ of suitable objects, lengths, shapes and appropriate quantities and associate simple fractions with division, e.g. ½ of 6 = 3.
