How to prevent Colic when changing routine. To reduce the risk of colic it is important to gradually change your horse’s routine and diet over a minimum of 10-14 days. The horse’s large intestine contains billions of bacteria which are sensitive to change. Introducing new feeds gradually will help the bacteria acclimatise and adapt.

- Bedding options. It is important that, if your horse is stabled, they are on suitable bedding to allow them to lie down and sleep comfortably. Options include straw, shavings, paper/cardboard, hemp and wood pellets.
Forage. Horses are predominantly grazers and should be fed a forage-based diet. Forage can include grass, hay and haylage as well as chaffs and grass replacers. Forage is vital for digestive health: horses are hindgut fermenters and require cellulose in their diet for the bacteria in the caecum to break down to help provide energy.
Food. While wild horses are sustained entirely by grass and forage, domesticated horses also rely on grain and hay. Depending on size and body condition, most horses will need somewhere between 10 and 20 pounds of hay per day.
