    • Check the latches. The first step when learning how to repair a door lock is to check that the door's latches are engaging properly. This is especially important if your door has a multipoint door handle, where you lift the handle to engage the three points of locking at the top, middle, and bottom of the door.
    • Look for gaps. You may need to make some seasonal adjustments by adding or removing hinge 'shims’ or ‘packers’. These are small metal plates that fit underneath the hinge, you can pick them up from most hardware stores and online at Amazon.
    • Remove or add a hinge packer. You don't need to know how to hang a door to install a hinge packer. Using a hand screwdriver, loosen the screws slightly from the hinge closest to the gap or area that is rubbing, so there is enough space to remove or slip a hinge packer behind the hinge.
    • Remove the euro cylinder lock. If your door appears to be sitting correctly (i.e. no gaps or rubbing), there may be a problem with the euro cylinder lock.

The latch plate is a small piece of metal held in place on the edge of the door by two screws. Remove it using a screwdriver.

The casing is the decorative and functional cap covering the guts of the lock. It is held in place by two bolts or screws on the inside of your exterior doors. The two long bolts hold the casing and the halves of the lock together. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the bolts while holding the backside of the lock, so it doesn't fall off once the bolt...

Once your latch plate is off and your casing bolts are removed, pull the two halves of the lock straight out on each side of the door. You'll see the frame of the lock that holds the latch or deadbolt plug remaining in the hole. You don't need to remove that unless you are changing out your entire door lock. That part is removed by pulling it out f...

    • Preparing to fit a mortice sash lock. When replacing a mortice sash lock, select one that’s compatible with your old lock. If the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole is 45mm, you need a 64mm lock; if it’s 57mm, you’ll need a 76mm lock.
    • Preparing to fit a Euro profile cylinder lock. These locks all have the same profile, so finding and fitting a replacement is more straightforward; however, you need to choose one that’s the same size as the one you’re replacing.
    • Preparing to fit a rim cylinder lock. Ensure your new lock is a British standard rim cylinder, as it will have been independently tested to ensure it can withstand all known forms of attack.
    • Remove the faceplate, handle and spindle. With the door open, turn the key so the bolt is locked. Take out the key, then remove the screws holding the faceplate, internal door handle and spindle bar.
  4. If your door lock has finally succumbed to wear-and-tear or is no longer functioning the way it should, the steps in this guide will show you how to fully replace and install a new one. A faulty door lock can lead to an unsafe environment and potentially cause harm to those occupying the property.

  5. 1. Remove the old uPVC door lock. Unscrew all the screws along the door profile length. This will loosen the multi-point locking system. Remove the door’s cylinder by inserting the key into the lock and moving it back and forth until it lines up with the inner cam of the lock.
