You’ll find there’s a lot of overlap so you’ll be able to prioritize those books. Group voting – Once you have a good running list of possible selections, have members vote.

You’d be surprised at the variety of ways that book clubs go about agreeing upon their book choices. Your book club has probably established its own practices for that. But, if the current method isn’t working for you, consider experimenting with some alternatives.
6. Use our Books Lists and Guides
Start with our huge list of the best book club books. It includes at least one book per month for the past few years. We use magic to divine what we think will be hot with book clubs this year. What’s nice about the list is that if your book club loves “what’s hot right now”, you can choose books from the top of the article. 7. Look at Book Club Challenges
One thing that is really great about a book club challenge is that it forces to read more diversely. This can mean getting outside of your normal genre, reading about other races and cultures, or finding books on topics that you wouldn’t normally consider. Even if your book club members don’t want to commit to a huge year-long book challenge, you can get some really fun ideas by simply trolling the prompts from the challenges and picking one. 8. Use your Library’s Resources
You local library can be a great resource for figuring out how to choose books for book club. You can simply ask your Librarian what’s hot with clubs right now. Many libraries also have “book club kits” which include reader guides and enough books for each member to read. And some libraries have curated displays of trade paperbacks. The displays usually include multiple copies of books that have been popular in the last year or two.

Reading a book someone "just loves" can lead to hurt feelings—like inviting people into your living room to critique your decor.
- Do choose for good discussions. Some books don't offer a lot to chew on in the way of discussion. They may be great reads (romances, spy thrillers) but don't have much to talk about.
- Don't choose for the whole year. It ties you into a 12-month-long rigid schedule with no flexibility to add exciting new works you might learn about. And it's unfair for those who miss the one meeting when selections are made.
- Do choose 2 or 3 at a time. This allows members to read at their own pace. It's especially helpful for those who travel or miss a meeting or two.
Feb 2, 2023 · Grab bag Ask your members to write down titles they’re excited about. When you’re ready to select a book for your next meeting, pick a title at random from the list. This adds an element of surprise to the selection process. As members hear about new books throughout the year, invite them to add more titles to the mix!

Clubs that pick books randomly tend to emphasize the fun of a surprise book pick, and say that this method can lead to a more eclectic set of book club selections.

It’s an opportunity to learn from each other and open ourselves up to different views. Disagreements can be healthy and stimulating, but they need to be respectful and constructive.

Jun 16, 2011 · Which means that, for me, step #1 for selecting a bookclub book is STRESS LIKE MAD. Preferably for weeks. Currently, I belong to two bookclubs. For one of them, I chose Wait Til Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I’d read it in 2006 for my sports history class at BYU (a much more difficult class than you might guess) and had really enjoyed it.
