On a road bike, it’s much more steep to put you further over the pedals for power output. On the gravel bike, things are more laid back.
For most people, this is the main deciding factor between a road bike and a gravel bike. Road bikes today come in stock with tires that are 25-28mm wide. In the past, road bikes used to have much narrower tires (23mm), but the trend in recent years has been to go wider for comfort.

- The evolution of the road bikes. It wasn’t so long ago that most of the best road bikes closely resembled each other. While the frame material might differ, the look of the bikes was pretty uniform: round tubing, rim brakes, quick-release dropouts and narrow tyres.
- The evolution of gravel bikes. While the gravel bike, at least in its most recent guise, is far newer than the traditional road bike, it too has seen plenty of development in a relatively short space of time.
- Geometry. At the more extreme end a gravel bike well-suited to bikepacking and generally gnarly off-road conditions will place a premium on stability and comfort.
- Tire clearance. Perhaps the most recognisable difference between gravel bikes and road bikes is tire clearance. As a rule of thumb, a gravel bike will allow for wider tires than a road bike.
