- JJ Thomson created a sealed cathode ray tube with minimal air inside. Connected the tube to a power source, causing electrons (cathode rays) to shoot out. Observed electrons moving in straight lines inside the vacuum of the tube. Introduced an electric field by adjusting the power, causing electrons to change their path.

The experiment Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) conducted by J. J. Thomson, is one of the most well-known physical experiments that led to electron discovery. In addition, the experiment could describe characteristic properties, in essence, its affinity to positive charge, and its charge to mass ratio.

Thomson determined that charged particles much lighter than atoms, particles that we now call electrons made up cathode rays. Cathode rays form when electrons emit from one electrode and travel to another. The transfer occurs due to the application of a voltage in vacuum.
Thomson’s First Cathode Ray Experiment. Thomson had an inkling that the ‘rays’ emitted from the electron gun were inseparable from the latent charge, and decided to try and prove this by using a magnetic field. His first experiment was to build a cathode ray tube with a metal cylinder on the end.
Thomson had shown that cathode rays behave as one would expect negatively charged material particles to behave. They deposited negative charge on an electrometer, and were deflected by both electric and magnetic fields in the appropriate direction for a negative charge.
Dec 13, 2018 · The electrons are attracted towards the anode, where they are focused into a beam called a cathode ray and continue their path to the electric field plates and electromagnet, where they are deflected.
Apr 22, 2014 · JJ Thompson did an experiment using a cathode ray tube and found that electrons passed from the surface of the cathode and accelerate toward the positively charged anode. The anode absorbed many electrons, but is the anode has slits some electrons will pass through.
Sep 7, 2017 · JJ Thomson discovered the electron in 1897 and there are tons of videos about it. However, most videos miss what JJ Thomson himself said was the motivating factor: a debate about how cathode rays move.
