Apr 5, 2021 · In 1973, Yamanashi Silk Center changed its name to Sanrio, moved its headquarters to Gotanda and opened its first restaurant. Sanrio Greetings was folded into this new company and the firm set up its film production arm. The company offers two different explanations for the name Sanrio.

The company name, Sanrio, is derived from the Spanish words San Rio, which literally mean “Saint River” in English. San meaning “Saint” just like in the place names San Francisco and San Diego, and Rio meaning “River”, as in the names of riverside cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande.
In 1973, the company was officially established under the name Sanrio. In the book Kore ga Sanrio no Himitsu Desu (これがサンリオの秘密です) or These are Sanrio's Secrets Tsuji, Sanrio's founder, said that Yamanashi (山梨), part of the company's former name has an alternative on'yomi reading of Sanri.
