Rooskens developed a personal language of magic signs in penetrating black, yellow, ochre, blue and red, creating compositions in which masks, shields and images of gods entwine in a jumble of spontaneous colour and lines which nevertheless form a certain balance. In 1954 he briefly turned to a geometric style influenced by African art.
Painter, and printmaker Anton Rooskens was born in Griendtsveen, Netherlands, on March 16, 1906. Though he attended the Venlo Technical School (1924 - 1934), he did not pursue a formal art education but rather taught himself how to paint.
Early in his artistic journey, he drew inspiration from luminaries like Jan Sluijters, Constant Peremke, and Vincent van Gogh, influencing his use of color and textured brushstrokes, particularly in his depictions of landscapes, still lifes, and interior scenes.

Anton Rooskens was a Dutch contemporary artist and teacher at the Don Boscoschool in Amsterdam. His painting draws heavily on 'primitive' art, particularly African art, as well as on the work of surrealist artists such as Joan Miró and André Masson.
These include major holdings of New Zealand historic, modern and contemporary art, and outstanding works by Māori and Pacific Island artists, as well as European painting, sculpture and print collections ranging in date from 1376 to the present day.
