Moria desires to become the new Pirate King, and believes that this is possible to achieve if he has powerful subordinates. Though he once claimed that he would rely on his own powers to achieve his goals, he is incredibly lazy; his motto is "relying upon others for one's own objective" and his favorite phrase is "You do it!!".
He wasn't using Luffy's shadow to become Pirate King directly. He was using Luffy's shadow to acquire stronger shadows that would eventually allow him to become Pirate King. Pretty sure of this.
From what we can piece together of the backstory, the entire reason Moria gave up on being the pirate king is most likely because Kaido crushed him in much the same way Luffy crushed Kuro. Just because over a decade later some randos heard about that fight, doesn't mean it was a particularly close fight.
Jan 22, 2024 · As the attack commenced, Moria took Sanji and Roronoa Zoro’s shadows as they were brought before him, implanting them in the zombies Inuppe and Jigoro, respectively. Later, Luffy was brought to Moria, who expressed his desire to become the Pirate King.
Moria tells Oars who he is and that he is now his minion, but Oars declares he will be Pirate King and proceeds to break out of the freezer much to the astonishment of the zombies. Meanwhile, Robin, Franky, Usopp, and Chopper run downstairs that lead to the ships.
