In 2014, Fiala announced his candidacy for the leadership of ODS, and was elected as the party's fourth leader on 18 January. He was re-elected as party leader in 2016. Fiala led ODS into the 2017 legislative election, in which the party finished second with 11% of the vote.

In autumn 2020 he became the nationwide leader of the newly formed electoral coalition SPOLU (ODS, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09). In October 2021 the SPOLU coalition won the parliamentary elections with a percentage of 27.8 %.
The same year, Fiala joined the ODS party and was elected its chairman. Between 2017 and 2021, he held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. In late 2020, he became the national leader of the newly created electoral coalition SPOLU.
