After a party at the hospital, Mattie overhears an argument between surgeon Hazel Mahoney and nurse Carol Stanning. Later that evening, Mattie finds Hazel, Ballarat Hospital's first female surgeon, hanging in an apparent suicide. Mattie tries resuscitation, but Hazel is dead.
