John Marwood Cleese (/ ˈkliːz / KLEEZ; born 27 October 1939) is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, producer, and presenter. Emerging from the Cambridge Footlights in the 1960s, he first achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report.

Cleese’s father Reg, an insurance agent, was born Reginald Cheese, but changed his name upon joining the army in 1915. He was worried that it would make him the target for asinine jokes, and lead him to be nicknamed “Cheesie”. Years later, his son John was deeply grateful for the change.
