Mar 6, 2020 · The turn of the century saw a Cereal Boom in Battle Creek. At one time, there were more than 100 companies registered in the city. Not all of them were legitimate. Some were shell corporations and others would buy cereal from off the shelf, repackage it, and then sell it again.
In the last decades of the nineteenth century, Battle Creek grew into a city of more than 22,000 inhabitants. It was the home of Nichols & Shepard and Advance threshing machine companies, supplying agricultural implements to farmers of the great plains of America and Russia.
The story of white settlement of the Battle Creek area begins in 1825 when government surveyors were working near a stream about 8 miles northeast of the present city of Battle Creek. On March 14 two Potawatomi Indians appeared at the base camp, asking for food.
The first permanent European settlements in Battle Creek Township, after the removal of the Potawatomi to a reservation, began about 1831. Westward migration from New York and New England had increased to Michigan following the completion of the Erie Canal in New York in 1824.
Settled in 1831 and named in 1834 for a “battle” that had taken place on the riverbank between two Indians and two members of a surveying party, it became a flour- and woolen-mill centre and the headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination.
