- Parasites. Both indoor and outdoor cats can pick up parasites, but the risk is higher for cats that venture outside. Parasites can live on a cat’s skin for a while and cause a wide range of symptoms.
- Allergies. The most common allergy in cats is an allergy to flea bites. You won’t often see the bite itself but will see either the skin’s allergic reaction to the bite, or your cat showing discomfort (hair loss, chewing on fur, or making the skin sore through overgrooming).
- Infections. Bacterial infections in cats are normally the result of a bite, wound or underlying skin disease such as an allergy. Therefore, the signs may be more related to the underlying process but more severe, or there may be scabs, sores, or redness on the skin.
- Ringworm. Ringworm is a common and highly contagious fungal infection of the surface of the skin, hair or nails. It’s not caused by a worm and it’s not always ring-shaped despite its name.
- Fleas and Flea Allergy. One of the most common causes of feline skin problems is a flea infestation. Even if your cat is inside most or all of the time, fleas can jump and still make their way indoors.
- Cat Allergies. Cats can have just as many types of allergies as humans. Common allergens include specific proteins in food, pollen, grasses, molds, and more.
- Mites on Cats. Some types of mites that affect cats include ear mites, Demodex cati, Demodex gatoi, the cat fur mite, and Notoedres cati. Many cats with mites will be very itchy, and hair loss, crusting, or skin infections can also be apparent.
- Fungus (Ringworm) The most common fungus cats pick up is ringworm. This fungus produces circular patches of hair loss and crusting as it attacks hair shafts and spreads outward.
- If your cat's dignified poses have given way to constant scratching and licking, a skin problem may be to blame. Cats are susceptible to skin infections, parasites, allergies, and many other conditions commonly seen in people.
- They may not have to worry about a prom night disaster, but cats get pimples, too. Feline acne typically appears on and around a cat's chin. Possible causes include stress, poor grooming, a reaction to medication, an underlying skin condition, or even the plastic bowl you put out with their food or water.
- In many cases, bacterial skin infections develop as a result of another skin problem. For example, feline acne can make a cat's hair follicles more vulnerable to infection, resulting in folliculitis.
- Yeast infections are caused by a fungus and are also more likely in cats that have other medical problems. The ear is one of the most common spots for a yeast infection.
