- Listen to Music You Love. Listening to music you love is one of the best ways to find inspiration to write a great song. This could be any genre, style, or type of music — what matters is that it gets you thinking.
- Get Your Ideas Out of Your Head. Another essential step to writing great music is simply getting your ideas down before they disappear. Try setting a timer for 1 or 2 minutes and spend that dedicated time listening to your stream of consciousness while you write them down.
- Remember That No Idea Is a Bad Idea. Sometimes when you’re writing a song, you try all kinds of ideas, but nothing seems to work. It can be frustrating to plunk out chords and melodies, listen back to them, and want to start all over again.
- Let Your Imagination Run Wild. When it comes to writing, fear is a common enemy. It’s easy to be afraid of trying something new and failing. As humans, we’re programmed in many ways to stray away from the unknown.
- Use writing prompts. We often feel stuck simply because we get overwhelmed by the number of options available to us. When there are no limits to what your song can be about and where it can go, how do you choose which direction to take?
- Use a random word generator. Another great way to give yourself constraints and a clear goal is to use a random word generator. Find one online and set it to give you three random words.
- Set a timer. Another way to challenge your brain and kickstart the creative process is by creating a time constraint. Set a timer for 30 minutes or an hour and see how much you can write before it goes off.
- Write a draft. One of the main causes of writer’s block is perfectionism—the pressure to write something amazing keeps you so paralyzed that you don’t end up writing anything at all.
- Ask why, how, when, where and who? Ask yourself questions about the subject. If your song is about a suspicious old man then ask the questions: Where does he go?
- Put on some music. Listen to music that fits the mood of the song you are about to write. It gets you into the vibe.
- Don’t try to be a perfectionist. Just write your story, lower your standards and adjust it later if you need to. Knowing that you can always alter it afterwards will make you write more fluidly.
- Read. Read books, blogs or magazines on the subject or topic you want to write about. Expand your horizon.
